Although I'm THE biggest Mortal Kombat fan ever to have walked on the surface of the Earth, I can't help but dismiss the possibility of a 2D MK heading the iPhone's way. Not with this control scheme anyway. I hope, however, that with the appropriate tweaks, a new 2D MK edition does hit Apple's smartphone.

Naturally, the fact that Mortal Kombat "TOUCH" has emerged on April Fools did influence me to dismiss its possibility, but the video provided by TRMK.org is quite convincing nonetheless. It features MK II Kitana and Kabal (an MK 3 selectable player) in the Dead Pool stage.

First of all, there is no 2D Mortal Kombat out there to feature both players - only the Ultimate MK 3 version of Kitana can meet Kabal in a fight. Although MK Trilogy does sport earlier versions of the same players (for instance, MKII Jax and Kung Lao, and MK one Sonya and Kano), the MKII version of "Princess Kitana" is not to be found within this installment.

Still, this doesn't mean that Ed Boon (co-creator of the Mortal Kombat fighting game series) didn't get his hands on the iPhone SDK to work some Kitana-Kabal magic. TRMK.org is reporting that Midway is developing a port of Mortal Kombat for the iPhone and iPod Touch. According to tuaw.com, "apparently" Ed Boon ... posted coded message on his site, spelling out TOUCH.

"Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon updated his personal website, noob.com with a variety of things. But most importantly, the coded message of TOUCH seems to carry a little more weight than everything else on the site. We investigated the TOUCH word with our sources and unearthed a shocking revelation. Midway is working on bringing the Mortal Kombat universe to Apple's iPhone / iPod Touch platform," TRMK reveals.

So this is what everyone's getting all excited about? Oh, man... Just when I was beginning to accept the idea of MK Touch.
