Nemertes Research's new report "2010-11 Mobility Benchmark," available via Research and Markets, says that IT professionals are now shifting their attention from merely deploying mobility to supporting a range of devices, the most prolific of which seems to be Apple’s iPhone.

The research note indicates that mobility is rapidly maturing, while growth in mobile budgets is decreasing.

IT professionals now need custom enterprise applications beyond email, calendaring and contact management, according to the analysis.

Just as imperative for deployment are unified communications applications, such as presence, Web conferencing, and video, Research and Markets said.

As such, the focus has turned from deploying devices to supporting a broader range of products like iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.

They’ve also found that, because of application and device proliferation and an increase in user sophistication, the success of mobility initiatives is very mixed.

The iPhone’s impact on the Enterprise is huge. Vendors like Research In Motion are feeling it the most, according to the report.

“[RIM]’s lock on the enterprise is eroding as organizations increasingly support other devices (most commonly, Apple's iPhone),” reads one of the top trend notes.

Finally, Research and Markets outlines that “Organizations increasingly require support for mobility as part of their application deployments and rarely report performance issues with mobile applications,” which is precisely what you’ll hear from groups using iPhone.

Apple has arguably the most comprehensive Support service for business deployment of its iDevices, making it a natural choice for businesses, small and big.
