Lonely Planet Publications Pty Ltd has announced a “volcano relief sale” on its Lonely Planet City Guide applications. Available free of charge (temporarily, though), the software offers location-based navigation, hundreds of points of interest, a professional image gallery, personalized favorites and editorial content. Lonely Planet is offering its 13 city-guide apps for free in response to Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption, which has covered northwestern Europe in a massive cloud of ash.

“In response to the widespread chaos caused by the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano, Lonely Planet is offering 13 of its European iPhone guides free,” the company has announced on its blog. “Travellers stuck in unfamiliar places need access to practical information as well as suggestions on what to do whilst stranded,” Tom Hall, Lonely Planet travel editor, said. “That’s why we’re giving away iPhone city guides to major affected destinations.”

The company has actually developed just one Lonely Planet City Guide application, which supports 13 major European capital cities, including Amsterdam; Barcelona; Berlin; Budapest; Copenhagen; Istanbul; London; Moscow; Munich; Paris; Rome; Stockholm; Vienna. The 13 guides will be available for free until Thursday, 22 April from the iTunes App Store, the company has confirmed.

“We’ve fully re-engineered this best-selling guide to make the most of your pocket companion, offering comprehensive interactive maps with GPS plotting; dedicated chapters on London’s festivals, history, architecture and culture; gorgeous photography to help paint the picture; walking tours and excursions to get you out and about, and nearly 1000 independently-reviewed places to eat, sleep, shop, see and socialise, all at your fingertips. Plus essential information on getting around on the Tube, getting to and from the airport and more,” one of the guides’ descriptions (Lonely Planet London City Guide) reads.

Check with iTunes here for all the city guides Lonely Planet Publications has to offer. All apps support the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, and require iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

“Our location-aware technology gives you hundreds of handy reviews, striking images and interactive maps – all searchable, portable and easily personalised. Browse guidebook chapters, discover neighbourhoods & plan your itinerary,” Lonely Planet Publications says.
