Apple has released a new version of the iPhone Configuration Utility for Mac OS X and Windows. About iPhone Configuration Utility 1.1 for Mac OS X

iPhone Configuration Utility lets you easily create, maintain, and sign configuration profiles, track and install provisioning profiles and authorized applications, and capture device information including console logs.

Configuration profiles are XML files that contain device security policies, VPN configuration information, Wi-Fi settings, APN settings, Exchange account settings, mail settings, and certificates that permit iPhone and iPod touch to work with your enterprise systems.

Apple points out to the iPhone and iPod touch Enterprise Deployment Guide (available for download here) for instructions on how to use iPhone Configuration Utility. The PDF guide is now at its fourth edition. It tells users how to best integrate iPhone or iPod touch with their enterprise systems. The guide focuses on deploying iPhone and iPod touch, creating and deploying configuration profiles, manually configuring devices, deploying iTunes and iTunes apps, Cisco VPN, as well as the configuration profile format.

Apple notes that the iPhone and iPod touch are designed to easily integrate with Enterprise systems including Microsoft Exchange 2003 and 2007, 802.1X-based secure wireless networks, and Cisco IPSec virtual private networks. As with any enterprise solution, good planning and an understanding of the deployment options make deployment easier and more efficient for the enterprise and its users. This is where the Enterprise Deployment Guide comes to their assistance.
