New iPhone seems less prone to dings and scratches

A thread on Reddit discussing the status of iPhone 6 four months after its debut indicates that Apple has finally achieved a design that doesn’t wear out too rapidly. This is most likely due to the curved nature of the chassis and the front glass.

Although there have been reports of bent units and easily-scratched screens, the iPhone 6 appears to hold up relatively well in normal usage scenarios without protective sleeves, cases, or plastic films.

Wear-resistant design

“It's been completely naked, but apart from a few small scratches (as to be expected) on the back, it's doing great,” writes one user. “6 Plus and zero issues,” someone else adds. Another one chimes in to say, “Same 6 plus, no case, zero issues... Can't believe it's been 5 months already tho.. Time flies.”

This is in response to the OP’s claim that iPhone 6 has been around for five months, when in fact, it’s been only four months since the handset rolled out to the masses. However, that’s enough time to gauge the build quality of a smartphone, and the reports are certainly more positive than those involving the iPhone 5 just weeks after its debut in 2012.

The iPhone 5 had an edgy design and an apparently softer aluminum enclosure, making it prone to dings and scratches, even bending according to some reports. The iPhone 6 design, on the other hand, has tapered edges and rounded corners, making it less susceptible to incurring damage from normal usage. However, it’s also easier to drop one, which tends to even things out.

Not everyone is pleased

A couple of jokers also took on the thread. One reports that his own unit has bent to the point where it’s become a flip phone, while another says “Mine has bent within itself and has created a black hole. It sucked my cat into an alternate universe but the battery life is honestly amazing.”

On a more serious note, there are also plenty of users who are reporting a bad experience with their handset: “I've got a few scuffs around the edge, just like the 5 used to get. I assume that's par for the course with iPhones now. My screen has a scratch on it that's bugging the crap out of me,” one user reveals.

While the reports are certainly mixed, there do seem to be far more positive ones than there are negative ones, something you normally wouldn’t expect from a thread discussing the build quality of a piece of hardware. This is basically because people tend to chime in when they have a bad experience to report, while those who are pleased with their unit are less inclined to be vocal and just continue to enjoy their purchase.
