The protruding camera on the back and bending fear will probably make a lot of people spring for a case

The design of the iPhone 6 is, without fail, jaw-dropping. But that doesn’t mean it’s 100% practical. There are some design elements in there that will force some people to reconsider how they use their phone.

Mind you, this is not another attempt to start a new “gate.” These are just observations coming from someone who hasn’t strapped a case on his iPhone, ever. The reason? To enjoy – rather than preserve – its aesthetic design.

Protruding camera

One major annoyance that many people will incur will be the flushing camera lens on the back of the phone. To everyone concerned that the lens will scratch, I can tell you right off the bat that it will be very hard to do that unless you really set your mind to it.

Firstly, sapphire crystal is the second hardest material known to man (after diamond). Second, the metal framing the lens also acts as a shield. In other words, if you rest the thing on its back, the first thing that makes contact with the table is the metal, not the sapphire.

However, that gives birth to a new problem. Excessive wear around the camera lens and at the opposing end – these being the two areas of the phone that will come into contact with any surface.

And despite using ion-strengthened glass on the front, you won’t want to rest it on its face either. Eventually, it will get scratched.

Some say it bends

We can’t confirm nor deny the bending reports, but it’s fair to assume that the fear has been injected into the mind of the consumer. No one will want to find out the hard way, so this is yet another reason why many people will consider – now, more than ever – buying a case.

If history is any indication, Apple shouldn’t include one for free. It would be regarded as admittance that there’s a problem with the phone. However, it would be awesome if smartphone vendors decided one day to just include one as default.

Slippery Pete

We use smartphones like crazy. Some people have them in their hands almost the entire day. It’s impossible to never drop it. Whether someone gave you a nudge, or you banged it on a surface, or you simply didn’t clutch it hard enough, one day it will happen.

And with the rounded edges of the iPhone 6, it’ll be even easier to send it tumbling down onto the hard concrete. In fact, the first iPhone 6 unit ever sold actually slipped out of the owners hand right as he was being interviewed by the press. It was an embarrassing moment. And you don't want that happening to you.
