Purported iPhone 5 cases indicate little to no change in design from current iPhone 4

Purported iPhone 5 cases leaked by a ‘reliable’ source suggest Apple has no big plans with the design of its upcoming iPhone 5, leaving the flagship elements in place to focus on a supposed under-the-hood overhaul.

HardMac, the English version of French blog Macbidouille, got hold of the image displayed to the left from what it considers a “reliable” source.

The site admits this information has not been confirmed, but takes the risk of publishing it based on its source’s reputation.

The source in question allegedly said that these would be prototypes of the iPhone 5 cases, based on documentation provided by Apple itself.

Whether or not HardMac meant to say ‘obtained’ from Apple, rather than ‘provided’ by Apple, the image depicts a virtually identical form factor compared to the iPhone 4.

There’s no one to say this rumor isn’t 100 percent manufactured, though.

After all, how hard could it be to shoot a picture of existing iPhone 4 cases, spice up the colors a bit, publish the photo chock full of watermarks and say it’s just another iPhone 5 clue?

Not that hard. And believe us, some will go to even greater lengths to get attention (page views).

But we’re not suggesting HardMac is duping its audience. The site most likely posted whatever their source handed to them, and even admitted it wasn’t something 100% confirmed.

We simply advise readers to take this leak (as all previous leaks) with a grain of salt.

According to the imagery, there is no “fundamental” change in the placement of the external physical buttons and the SIM card slot, Hardmac notes.

Indeed, the cases look as if they were designed for the current-generation iPhone. But is it so far fetched that iPhone 5 looks almost identical to the iPhone 4?

The upgrade from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3GS should stand as indication that Apple can wait two years for a complete design overhaul.
