In what is a predictable move on behalf of the iPhone Dev Team, a new version of the Mac OS X jailbreak & unlock application - PwnageTool 3.1.3 - is now available for free download via the hackers’ blog. The team’s latest version of PwnageTool for Mac OS X adds support for the 3.1 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 2G, according to the latest Dev Team update. The latest version of the iPod touch is currently not supported by PwnageTool.

“The iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the phone was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box,” the iPhone Dev Team proudly states. “If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment. The iPod 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box,” the infamous team of hackers adds.

In addition to downloading PwnageTool 3.1.3, users will need to download the latest version of the iPhone / iPod touch OS and build a custom IPSW file using PwnageTool. Here are the file names for each device model in part:

- iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (241 MB) – first-gen iPhone; - iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (242 MB) – iPhone 3G; - iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (306.2 MB) - iPhone 3GS; - iPod1,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) – iPod touch, first generation; - iPod2,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch, second generation; - iPod3,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch, third generation.

As usual, the team posts the “golden rule” for those using an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service. If so, “then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool,” the iPhone Dev Team says. “There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.” The team then proceeds with the compatibility details.

According to the hackers, PwnageTool 3.1.3 will work for iPhone 3GS users, provided they've already pwned it under OS 3.0 or 3.0.1; the tool will also work for iPod touch 2G owners under the same circumstances, but not for the third-generation iPod touch (in other words, PwnageTool currently supports all device models, except for the latest-introduced iPod touch); “for 3G and 3GS users who are Pwned, PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future,” the team warns, “just remember to never install an update directly from Apple, always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageToo.”

Lastly, the Dev Team sadly informs Windows users that, “PwnageTool it is [sic] a Mac OS X tool only,” therefore a Windows solution is currently unavailable. The team may, however, decide to update its QuickPwn application (the PC alternative to PwnageTool) for Windows users in the future.
