Tools to jailbreak and unlock the handset are on their way

The restless, code-savvy individuals forming what is known as the iPhone Dev Team can confirm that the iPhone 3G S is just as exploitable as previous-generation models. Owners of the new handset will be able to get their hands on the jailbreak and unlock tools soon, the team reveals. Softpedia, as avid readers should know, does not condone jailbreaking.

“24Kpwn lives on, in the iPhone 3GS!,” the Dev Team proudly states on its blog. “About 5 hours ago, we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still present in the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS,” the post continues. “That means we can apply the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS,” the team reveals.

Touting this as great news, the team further stresses that, seemingly, the bootrom was cut around August last year, “so the unfortunate early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.” “And yes, ultrasn0w will be able to be used on the iPhone 3GS for you unlockers!,” just in case anyone missed the big picture.

An important note on the team’s blog also reveals that, “Apple has not given up on the cat&mouse game, and in fact there are challenging aspects of the 3GS jailbreak that aren’t in the other devices.” According to the Dev Team, “It’ll take some time to work these into our tools, but the fundamental weaknesses are there: The bootrom is exploitable via 24Kpwn, and the baseband is exploitable via ultrasn0w.” As usual, ultrasn0w for the 3G S will require users to wait patiently for every new firmware version to be hacked.
