The new iPad is selling fast, an Apple spokesperson has confirmed to the press. Not that it required any official confirmation, because pretty much every Apple online store offering pre-orders is now listing 2-3 weeks for shipping.

An Apple spokesperson told CNet that, “Customer response to the new iPad has been off the charts and the quantity available for pre-order has been purchased.”

The Apple official added that “Customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. Beginning Friday, March 16, the new iPad will be available for purchase at Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers on a first come, first-served basis.”

In addition to the United States, the new iPad will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands on Friday, March 16.

According to Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing speaking on March 7 (when the new tablet was unveiled), “The new iPad redefines the category Apple created less than two years ago, delivering the most amazing experience people have ever had with technology.”

“The new iPad now has the highest resolution display ever seen on a mobile device with 3.1 million pixels, delivering razor sharp text and unbelievable detail in photos and videos,” said Schiller.

The third-generation iPad is all about the 2048x1536 Retina display, which outputs crisp visuals and incredible color saturation on 3.1 million pixels - more than any large HD TV out there.

The tablet computer is powered by an enhanced A5X processor with quad-core graphics.

The new iPad also features an enhanced, 5 megapixel iSight camera on the back for taking pictures and recording full HD video. Its battery lasts 10 hours between charges (9 when used on LTE networks, according to Apple).
