Great news out of Taiwan today as it seems Apple is finally ready to unveil its fifth-generation iPad in September, with pilot units set to ship in enough numbers to satisfy demand in the first few weeks.

Citing the usual sources in the upstream supply chain, Taiwan’s DigiTimes reports that Apple will most likely meet its September deadline for the iPad 5 launch.

The assemblers have mostly finished preparing for production, making it very unlikely to see any new changes occur in terms of specifications.

According to the report, Apple has improved on almost every aspect of the tablet computer.

The fifth-generation iPad will reportedly boast a Retina display, a slimmer bezel, a single LED tube (helping with power consumption and heat), and more battery life.

The sources said Apple’s suppliers haven’t yet received a solid mass production schedule. However, the assemblers are already shipping iPads for pilot production.

Those same sources added that “pilot production is already able to satisfy demand for the initial launch,” according to the report.

The fifth-generation iPad, or iPad 5 as the media calls it for reporting convenience, will allegedly employ a design similar to that of the iPad mini.

The screen bezel will be reduced, while the tapering on the back will be less pronounced. However, in essence, the iPad 5 will actually be an enlarged version of the iPad mini. The tablet will ship in both silver and black (slate), according to most rumors.

The device will reportedly sport a thinner body than that of the current-selling iPad 4, and it will also be much lighter according to people who are familiar with Apple’s plans.

The Cupertino giant is expected to hold an event this fall for the unveiling of a new range of products, including new iPads and new iPhones.
