A new iPad capable of displaying 3D video is said to be in the advanced planning stages at Apple, with film studios rushing to have 3D content ready for when the device launches.

Citing a “Hollywood insider” who allegedly said the device is already in the “advanced planning stages”, RCR Wireless reveals that Apple’s iPad 3 is not just a rumor anymore, but “a dead cert.”

Their source went on to say that the big film studios are gearing up to release 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch.

The report does not provide actual timing, but rumors have it that Apple will introduce the new device in the fall, in order to prevent Android-based tablets from gaining momentum.

The details dished out by this source are also backed by a person with ties to Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturing partner for iDevices.

The Foxconn source reportedly “spilled the 3D iPad beans” to their closest industry sources.

Just last week we informed that three Foxconn employees had been arrested and charged with leaking the iPad 2 design specifications to accessory makers.

We wouldn’t be surprised to hear in the near future that more such arrests were made.

Apple has shown clear interest in developing 3D technology for its devices, and the main candidate to receive the treatment is undoubtedly the iPad, whose 10-inch screen can best leverage such capabilities.

Nintendo, the renowned Japanese company responsible for some of the most popular gaming systems out there, is the first to the 3D race on portable devices.

With its 3DS handheld console, Nintendo has achieved glasses-free 3D by means of an auto-stereoscopic screen. The technology Apple will use for the iPad 3 is different, source say.

While 3D can also be achieved via special screens, few such applications have proven worthwhile. What Apple is likely to employ is "head-tracking" technology.

Concepts proving it is already possible with the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 lend credence to speculation that Apple will be taking a stab at it, and soon too.
