iCloud backup reset indicates imminent launch approaching

An iCloud backup reset scheduled this week indicates there will be an announcement soon, as originally planned this summer. iCloud and iOS 5 will undoubtedly debut shortly, but now we may have a release date to speculate.

A post on the Apple Developer board this past weekend informed developers that an iCloud backup wipe was being scheduled.

“On Thursday, September 22, the iCloud Backup data will be reset. Backing up to iCloud or restoring from an iCloud backup will be unavailable from 9 AM PDT – 5 PM PDT,” the message said.

Developers were then notified of what behavior they should expect from the service, should they proceed with making a backup or restore during this timeframe.

“If you attempt a backup or restore during this time, you will receive an alert that the backup or restore was not successful,” the note said.

iCloud beta testers are also informed that backup image files created now will not be usable after the wipeout.

“After this reset, you will be unable to restore from any backup created prior to September 22. A full backup will happen automatically the next time your device backs up to iCloud,” the message said.

iOS 5 is currently at its seventh beta. An eighth one was expected to arrive on Friday, last week, though that didn’t happen. iOS 5 GM (Golden Master) should be up next. GM builds are usually the final, shipping version of the software.

In addition to iCloud and iOS 5 launching this fall as confirmed by Apple themselves during WWDC 2011, two new iPhones are expected to drop as well.

An October event is rumored with Apple releasing not only a completely redesigned iPhone 5, but also an incrementally updated iPhone 4S that will reportedly sell cheap, allowing Apple to ensure its lead in the market.
