Carlos La Borde announced today the release of his iMagic OS 2009.3, a commercial, Kubuntu-based Linux distribution. Featuring a customized version of OpenOffice, called magicOffice, an easier application installer, magicOnline, that replaces CNR (Click 'N Run), and a Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) base, the new iMagic OS 2009.3 is set to run right out of the box.

Another highlight of this release is its ability to detect the most popular file extensions (like .deb, .exe or .msi), recommend an action related to that file, and then open it in the corresponding program. The .exe and .msi support comes from the inclusion of Crossover software, making it easy to run many Windows applications.

From a security standpoint, iMagic OS bundles not one, not two, but three firewalls, recommending it as an almost 100% virus-proof system. Along with the OpenOffice.org suite, KOffice and Abiword are also included, for those who may prefer them. Twenty-two multimedia programs including support for Wii, PlayStation 3 and XBox Media Center make this distribution a perfect entertainment center.

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) suffered some changes as well, with fresh new themes, redesigned icons and a splash screen to fit the general appearance of iMagic OS. The Konqueror file manager makes it easier for those who come from a Windows environment, with features and places included in the blue and silver side bar that should be familiar to them. Another improvement users will definitely appreciate is a slimmer profile and a much better-structured system.

For those of you who are tired of Windows but don't have the time or simply don't want to tinker with other free Linux alternatives, iMagic OS is a great option, coming at much lower prices than Microsoft or Apple products.

You can buy iMagic OS right now from their website.
