The Dubai-based maker of Windows Mobile phones, i-mate, is reported to plan on coming at the Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona with a breakthrough smartphone, a revolutionary device that is said to be like no other.

Since the developer is focused on Windows Mobile-powered handsets, it is expected to unveil in February a new device running under Microsoft's operating system. There are not too many pieces of information on the new smartphone, although it may come with the yet unannounced Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, which is also expected to be demonstrated in Barcelona.

Some voices over the Web argue that there is little hope that a mobile phone featuring the WinMo OS could be something “revolutionary.” Even if it comes with the latest version of the platform, it is rather unlikely to prove to be a “mobile device that's like no other.”

On the other hand, the mobile phone maker could be working on a brand new design for its device, which would qualify it for the abovementioned title. Considering that it could unveil a handset with a slick new form factor, a new keyboard, new user interface, a new high-resolution touchscreen display or some new technology yet unseen in other phones, then the company's saying might prove true.

Of course, speculations on what i-mate has up its sleeve could go far beyond this, mainly due to a company's PR release, which stated the following: “At MWC 2009 i-mate will be unveiling its brand new product – one which sees them break new grounds with a revolutionary mobile device that’s like nothing else.” Waiting for the mobile show to come around so we can then see what device the company intends to unveil would probably be the safest thing to do at the moment.
