The search giant only wanted its brand name on these devices

Many of you probably know that both the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are manufactured by HTC, not Google. Just like last year's Nexus 6P was fully built by Huawei under Google's supervision.

Although Google has used many handset makers in the past to build its Nexus devices, it was surprising to see that the search giant did not continue the collaboration with Huawei, especially that the Nexus 6P was a quite alright phone.

Well, it looks like Google wanted to continue to work with Huawei, but the Chinese company was the one to turn down the search giant's offer. German website Winfuture.de reports that Colin Giles, VP of the Consumer Business Group at Huawei, confirmed his company decided to abandon the cooperation with Google for the Pixel devices.

The reason might seem dumb at first glance, but to each his own. Apparently, Huawei did not want Google to put its brand name on the Pixel phones.

The Chinese handset maker wished to make its devices more popular among Android users, so it expected Google to allow it to put its own brand name on the Pixel phones as well.

Since Google was pretty clear that it did not want any other brand name etched on the Pixel phones other than its own, Huawei decided not to build the devices.

But Huawei's decision not to act as a pure contract maker and put its brand name on any device it built has been made a long time ago, so dropping the collaboration with Google was a direct consequence of this marketing strategy.

However, Huawei's official insists that his company continues to work closely with Google on various projects. Giles goes on to say that he doesn't dismiss a future collaboration with the search giant if both companies' strategies are compatible.
