The company can be forced to use backdoors, it explains

Huawei spying for China is a debate that occasionally makes the headlines, especially because agencies and government across the world are continuously looking into any concerns in order to guarantee state security.

The Chinese company, however, pointed out repeatedly that all spying allegations are false and not a single government managed to produce any evidence that such activities have indeed been carried out by the vendor.

Liang Hua, Huawei chairman, now comes up with a different explanation, noting that even if China asks the company to create backdoors in network equipment, it can very well refuse.

Hua revealed that Huawei never received such a request from the Chinese government, but the law can’t force the company to comply with it, according to a report from Bloomberg.

“We will not execute the request,” he said. “We have kept a good track record on cyber-security.”

No evidence of spying

One of the main concerns regarding companies based in China, including Huawei, is that the Beijing government can force them to provide access to customer data based on local laws. But according to Huawei, while such a law does exist, it doesn’t specifically mention a backdoor that would make it possible to track communications.

Worries over possibly spying for China have led to some countries reconsidering their plans for 5G networks, with some governments even banning Huawei entirely.

“At the end of the day, we hope decisions on 5G can be made based on technology and not on other factors,” Huawei’s chairman said. “At any time, at any point, it is normal for us, for a company to be faced with challenges and difficulties.”

The United States, New Zealand, and Australia have already set restrictions for Huawei, while other countries, including here the United Kingdom, are still considering such a decision. Germany says it doesn’t intend to ban Huawei after previously explaining it found no evidence the company was spying for China.
