Because nobody’s doing it on Android, that’s why

Software updates in the Android ecosystem are quite a nightmare, as many OEMs release new devices only to then either never ship improvements or publish them at a painfully-slow pace.

In its struggle to fight with the big guys, Huawei is making a major step towards resolving this problem. The company has promised major software updates for a wide array of devices every two months, in addition to the monthly security patches for Android.

The first step would be made next month when Huawei would bring a face unlock option to a wider array of phones, including the Huawei P10, P20, P20 Pro and more affordable models like Mate9, Mate10 and Mate10 Pro, as well as the nova3e, nova 2lite and nova 2i.

In a typical press releasey statement, Huawei explains that it’s committed to delivering this feature to many of its devices, despite face unlocking typically being offered on flagships.

“Huawei is committed to improving our new and existing customers’ experiences. We hope our customers will continue to find great enjoyment from using their Huawei smartphones. Face Unlock is a feature that has been, until now, limited to premium smartphones.

Huawei is proud to be able to bring this feature to a wider, more accessible range of smartphones. We are a leading innovator in smartphone technology and we will continue to provide Australian users with cutting edge products, which complement their needs and lifestyle – without having to break the bank. This firmware update ensures the majority of our phones released over the past two years, beyond our 2018 smartphone releases, feature Face Unlock capabilities.”

Delivering updates every two months is a challenge that not even Samsung has managed to cope with before. It’s a well-known fact that Samsung has an update problem, as new Android versions and feature improvements for its devices typically land slower than in the case of other brands, including for flagship models.
