Huawei is expected to launch its flagship smartphone, the P9, on April 6. There will be no less than four versions of Huawei P9 announced next week, covering almost all price points.

But a new rumor claims that Huawei P9 won’t be the most innovative device the Chinese company will launch this year. Despite the fact that it comes with a dual camera setup, Huawei P9 might be overshadowed by the next high-end smartphone that’s supposed to arrive in the second half of the year.

GizmoChina reports that analyst Sun Chagxu claims other companies will launch smartphones with curved displays this year. Samsung and Vivo are the first to have introduced this type of smartphones this year, the Galaxy S7 edge and Xplay 5, but they are not a premiere for the industry.

According to Chagxu, Huawei will also launch a smartphone with double-curved display in H2, but it won’t look like the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S7 edge that are already available on the market.

The information is confirmed by sources in the supply chain, but details about the unannounced smartphone are still a mystery.

The addition of a curved display is supposed to raise Huawei’s profit margin

The same analyst also stated that the upcoming smartphone could be a sequel to the popular Huawei Mate S, which is available in China for around $615. However, the new Huawei Mate S2 will be priced slightly higher at $770 outright.

If these speculations prove to be accurate, Huawei will be forced to compete with other major brands that offer products at the same price tier, including Apple, Samsung, LG and HTC.

The reason for the slightly higher price of the Mate S2 is the curved display, which is expected to raise Huawei’s profit margin. It remains to be seen if this “innovative” device coming from Huawei will become at least as popular as the original Mate S.
