A small incremental upgrade over the last year flagship

HTC has decided not to unveil its new flagship smartphone during CES 2017 trade fair nor at Mobile World Congress next month. Instead, the new HTC U Ultra has been introduced at a dedicated event, which received the full attention of the press.

Unfortunately, the Taiwanese company didn't come up with anything surprising or innovative, it just copied some of the features introduced by LG and added a couple of small incremental upgrades over the previous flagship smartphone, the HTC 10.

By the time the HTC U Ultra goes on sale in March, many big players in the smartphone industry would have released their flagships, and most of them will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor.

The U Ultra comes with a Snapdragon 821 CPU inside, which isn't really a major upgrade over the HTC 10, which features a Snapdragon 820 processor inside.

From what we've been able to learn, the main camera hasn't evolved too much, so expect the same picture quality if you already own the HTC 10. The selfie camera has been bumped to 16 megapixels from 5 megapixels.

Secondary display, but no 3.5mm audio jack for the U Ultra

The main difference between the two flagships would be the fact that the HTC U Ultra packs a larger 5.7-inch Quad HD display, as well as a secondary 2.05 display, just like the LG V10 and V20.

The HTC 10 doesn't have such a large display, nor a secondary display. However, both are now running Android 7.0 Nougat (or they should), so software-wise there shouldn't be any changes.

The battery has remained the same, as both phones are equipped with 3,000 mAh non-removable batteries. It's also worth noting that HTC U Ultra has ditched the 3.5mm audio jack, so it only features a USB Type C port.

You'll definitely notice that HTC U Ultra and HTC 10 are very different when it comes to design. We've put both HTC flagships side by side, so take a look and judge for yourself.
