Almost every generation of the Surface Pro tablet/laptop was affected by Wi-Fi connectivity issues that led to either no Internet access at all or just limited connectivity, but Microsoft tried to address them every time with OS and firmware updates.

Despite all of these, there still are Surface owners who complain that their devices are suffering from limited connectivity, so Microsoft decided to lend them a hand with a comprehensive guide on how to address such issues on a Surface device.

Microsoft's instructions include general recommendations, so if you're an advanced computer user, you might not find them very helpful, but they could still come in handy if you can't get your Surface online.

Six steps before anything else

Basically, Microsoft says there are six steps that need to be tried when the Surface is suffering from limited or no Internet connectivity.

Solution 1: Install the latest updates for Surface Solution 2: Check your date and time settings Solution 3: Restart Wi-Fi on Surface Solution 4: Restart network hardware and restart Surface Solution 5: Run troubleshooters Solution 6: Manually reinstall wireless driver

These are basic recommendations that can be applied in the case of almost any error that you come across on your PC, but Microsoft says that you should start with them before anything else. It's a known fact that many people contact Microsoft support without actually trying to troubleshoot errors on their own, so Microsoft might be trying to help users help themselves.

If none of the aforementioned steps works for you, Microsoft has a new bunch of solutions that include checking your network and router compatibility, update router and access point firmware, scan for interferences, check Mac filtering to verify if you are allowed to connect to the Internet and make sure your router is broadcasting the network name.

These solutions might not tell much to beginners, who expect flawless experience just out of the box, so delivering automatic updates that actually fix the issues would be a much better idea. But as you can see, some recommendations aren't necessarily related to the device itself, and your Wi-Fi connectivity could be broken because of other factors, including a bad router configuration.
