According to film critics and even fans, it’s been many years since Adam Sandler put out a decent movie, but it looks like his streak of bad luck at the box office has been broken thanks to “Hotel Transylvania 2.” It’s true, he only does voice work in it, but it still counts.

The animated film from Sony, which also features voice work from Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James and Keegan-Michael Key, debuted very strong in both the US and international markets. In fact, it performed so well domestically that it just set a new record for the September box office in North America, The Hollywood Reporter informs.

“Hotel Transylvania 2” made $47.5 million (€42.2 million) on its opening weekend, which makes it the top grossing September release of all time, “not accounting for inflation.” The previous record holder was actually the original “Hotel Transylvania,” which made $42.5 million (€37.7 million) when it came out in 2012.

“We had a great date, and this is a big win for Sony Pictures Animation,” Sony President of Marketing Josh Greenstein says. “And the movie is exploding.”

Indeed, the family-friendly pic opened in 32 more territories this weekend, grossing $29.2 million (€25.9 million) so far. It’s not enough to make it a winner yet, considering that it was made on a budget of $80 million (€71.1 million), but as Greenstein says, it’s “exploding.”

With such a solid start, it will be turning a profit very soon. In other words, expect a threequel as well.
