14 DAY TRIAL // Paintbucket Games is a small developer that's working hard to bring us an interesting indie game they describe as a “historical resistance strategy game.” Through the Darkest Times is trying to highlight the bleak atmosphere and the struggles of average people living in the 3rd Reich. It's a sensitive subject that must be treated carefully, but of which the folks at Paintbucket Games aren't afraid of.
In Through the Darkest Times, players take the role of the leader of a small resistance group in 1933's Berlin, of ordinary people, from Jews to Catholics and Communists to Patriots who simply can’t stand aside.
The objective is not just to survive what's to come, but also to try and obtain small victories over the Nazi regime by dropping leaflets to spread awareness about what they are really up to among the people, painting messages on walls, sabotaging, gathering information and recruiting more followers.
Obviously, your people must remain undercover for as long as possible, otherwise, they risk being discovered and hunted down. Since historical accuracy means that a small group of resistance fighters will not change the outcome of the war, nor will they prevent all of the Nazi’s atrocities, they will still do everything in their power to save as many lives as they can and inhibit the fascist system whenever possible.
Through the Darkest Times' story unfolds over the course of 4 chapters, during which players will learn how people of that time fought for freedom and tried to weaken the regime. They will also see what it feels to lead your resistance group that always strikes for the shadow.
You'll be able to plan activities, find collaborators and try not to get caught, but you'll also feel the weight of responsibility as you make difficult decisions and face the dire consequences. Graphics-wise, the game features beautifully illustrated expressionistic scenes and events, so the more reason to give it a chance.
Through the Darkest of Times will be released on PC and Mac on January 30, 2020, but you can already wishlist the game on Steam.
