She says we need to focus on combating climate change

The Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from western Canada to the midwestern US, has been the topic of intense debate ever since TransCanada Corp. announced the project in 2008.

Green groups and scientists warn that, when completed and fully operational, the pipeline will become a major contributor to climate change and global warming, which are already a threat to our planet.

As it turns out, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton shares these views. This Tuesday, during a campaign event in Iowa, she took a firm stand against the controversial project.

It's fighting climate change we should focus on, she explains

Environmentalists have been pestering Hillary Clinton about her stance on the Keystone XL project ever since she announced her decision to run in the 2016 presidential election.

It took her a while to make up her mind and come up with an answer, but Hillary Clinton has now officially spoken against plans to build the pipeline and use it to exploit oil sands.

“I think it is imperative that we look at the Keystone XL pipeline as what I believe it is: a distraction from the important work we have to do to combat climate change, and, unfortunately from my perspective, one that interferes with our ability to move forward and deal with other issues.”

“Therefore, I oppose it. I oppose it because I don't think it's in the best interest of what we need to do to combat climate change,” she told the people attending her campaign meeting in Iowa.

Of course, not everybody shares her thoughts on the issue

Hillary Clinton might not think the Keystone XL pipeline a good idea, but others sure do. Their arguments: the project carries a minimal risk to the environment and has the potential to create thousands of jobs. Hence, dissing it makes no sense.

“@HillaryClinton finally says what we already knew. She favors environmental extremists over US job,” Republican presidential candidate John Ellis Bush wrote in a Twitter post.
