It’s happening again, this time with August 2016 CUs

Microsoft rolled three new cumulative updates on Tuesday, one for each Windows 10 version released so far (10240, 1511, and 1607), but just like it happened before, a number of users are experiencing issues when trying to install these.

Some of the reports that we’ve come across while searching for more information about these issues claim that Windows 10 cumulative update KB3176493, which is specifically aimed at PCs running version 1511 (November Update), fails to install and instead returns an error saying that updates “couldn’t be installed, undoing changes.”

This is the common error message that users are seeing when trying to install cumulative updates and fail to complete the process, and in the majority of cases, it’s impossible to find a fix pretty much because this error doesn’t say too much about the actual cause of the problem.

No workaround solves the problem

One of the users who experienced issues with this cumulative update explains on Microsoft’s Community forums that he tried all workarounds suggested online, but nothing worked.

“I have tried all the methods I can find online but this update still won’t install. Since this has been happening my computer is taking 15 min to start up because it is constantly trying to install the update and failing. I know I can’t turn off auto updates but this is getting ridiculous. I have even set a specific date to attempt the install and the update still doesn't work,” he posts.

The good thing is that not a lot of Windows 10 users seem to be affected by these issues at the moment, and the update installed fine for the majority of computers, but this still doesn’t mean that Microsoft shouldn’t develop a fix for the problem.

In the meantime, if nothing works in your case, it’s just better to wait until Microsoft comes up with a fix, and if the update keeps attempting to install, simply hiding it could come in very handy.
