Lumia 950 XL hacked to run Surface Hub OS

Windows 10 Mobile has been dead for a while, with our old Lumia phones pretty much useless these days since no OS and app updates are being released.

On the other hand, Windows phones are still as good as they get for experiments, and Gustave Monce, who has previously managed to get Windows 10 ARM up and running on the Lumia 950 XL, certainly knows this best.

The most recent such project involves a Lumia 950 XL and the operating system running Microsoft’s Surface Hub, the whiteboard that the Redmond-based software giant is insisting for in the enterprise.

So what Gustave Monce managed to do is install Microsoft Surface Hub OS on the Lumia 950 XL for the sole purpose of experimenting.

“You will need a few tools, which I made personally to even get such a Windows Teams ISO in the first place. You will not find a genuine Windows 10 Teams ISO for ARM64 in the wild like that. This is not the complete Teams OS even after using my tools, some apps are missing like the PPIWelcome app or PPISkype, the former being sort of critical for the OS to work as it provides the lockscreen UI,” the developer explains.

Nothing more than an experiment

The project is more complex than you’d expect, and even downloading the OS image is a challenging process, as the whole thing was conducted via Windows Update.

But is it worth doing the same and deploying Surface Hub OS on the Lumia 950 XL? Not really, unless you’re into this kind of experiment.

“Is it useful? No. Should you use this? No absolutely not. Is it pointless? Yes. But did I enjoy doing this? Heck yeah! And now you too can reproduce it,” Gustave Monce explained in a blog post detailing his work.
