14 DAY TRIAL // Rumors that Halle Berry and her third husband, French actor Olivier Martinez, who were married in 2013, were having serious issues and were even “living apart” have been around for months. They were confirmed in a way yesterday, when she filed for divorce, citing the usual irreconcilable differences.
Sources from her camp are telling the media that she wants the divorce to be quick and painless, as it would serve the best interests of her and Olivier’s son, Maceo. However, there are clear indications that it will be anything but: Martinez has filed his own petition, looking to annul hers, TMZ informs.
The divorce will probably be contentious
Officially, the divorce is amicable, as the joint statement released to the media (see it below in full) aims to show: things simply didn’t work out, but both parties will be doing their best to keep things amicable for Maceo’s sake.
Halle and Olivier also ask for privacy while they go through this.
According to the media outlet mentioned above, the divorce only appears to be amicable: Martinez has already made the first move against Halle. The report says that the actress filed the papers under a pseudonym for privacy reasons, which is how she managed to keep the filing a secret.
Martinez isn’t ok with that, and he’s filed his own papers, which name him as petitioner. “In Hollywood, it matters who left who,” TMZ says, about why it matters who is the petitioner on the divorce filing.
Like Berry in her filing, Martinez is asking for joint custody of Maceo. Neither makes any financial claim against the other because they have a prenup that ensures each walks away from the marriage with whatever money they made during this time.
What went wrong?
Sources tell People magazine that the relationship simply ran its course after two years, but other insiders vouch for TMZ that things were considerably more dramatic than this.
Apparently, they had been having problems for some time, but it all reached a boiling point last week when an LAX employee sued Martinez for assault after he pushed him with a baby seat during one of his infamous fits.
Berry blamed Martinez for her bad reputation, telling him that they wouldn’t be getting bad press if he only knew how to handle himself in public.
“Halle and Olivier had a fundamental personality clash,” TMZ says. “She is ‘very difficult’ and ‘goes nuts when she doesn't get her way,’ and Olivier has a temper, though not violent toward her. It was a bad combo.”
By the time they had this new explosive argument last week, they had already made up their mind about the marriage not working anymore, so this was like the final drop that finally made the glass spill.
