The jailbreak takes only 2 seconds to complete, he says

Believe it or not, but the days of jailbreaking iPhones aren’t over just yet, and a renowned developer and hacker has recently demonstrated that such a thing is possible on the iPhone X running even the latest version of iOS.

Axi0mX demoed on Twitter an exploit called checkm8, which according to reports, is unpatchable at a software level.

In other words, if this vulnerability can be used to jailbreak an iPhone, Apple can’t do anything about it with software updates, and by the looks of things, any iPhone equipped with an A-series chip up to the A11 Bionic can be unlocked using this method.

iPhone X is the newest iPhone model that can be jailbroken, so iPhone XS and iPhone 11 generations are presumably not affected.

Easy jailbreak

According to the developer himself, unlocking the iPhone doesn’t take more than two seconds with this method.

“HACKED! Verbose booting iPhone X looks pretty cool. Starting in DFU Mode, it took 2 seconds to jailbreak it with checkm8, and then I made it automatically boot from NAND with patches for verbose boot. Latest iOS 13.1.1, and no need to upload any images,” he posted.

For now, the jailbreaking software isn’t available for everyone, but given that this demo shows that unlocking an iPhone X is something that’s so easy to do, don’t be too surprised if more researchers start looking into it.

On the other hand, Apple itself is also likely to be inspecting these new findings, albeit given the vulnerability takes place at hardware level, it’s hard to believe the company can block it with a regular update.

Meanwhile, it looks like unlocking iOS software restrictions and stepping outside Apple’s walled garden is still something that iPhone owners would love to do, so jailbreaks are likely to survive for much longer than anyone expected.
