The hacker who claimed the DNC (Democratic National Committee) hack has now come forward and said he was the one who attacked the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee) as well.
To prove his claims, the hacker has leaked seven files on his WordPress.com blog and even told reporters to contact him if they wanted exclusive materials from the DCCC servers, which he says he has "plenty of."
Currently, there are two theories. One that Guccifer 2.0 indeed hacked the DNC and DCCC servers, and the second claiming that Guccifer's persona is nothing more than a sockpuppet account for Russian state agencies that are suspected to be behind the hack.
While these theories are up for debate, depending on which security reports and news sites you like to read, the documents leaked tonight by Guccifer are no doubt authentic, as his previous leaks were.
Hacker leaks contact details for a large number of Democrats
In this recent treasure trove, the hacker has published at least three files containing passwords for accounts and subscriptions for various services used by DCCC's staff, such as the Wall Street Journal, Congress Daily, Roll Call, the Kindle service, and more.
Another file contains the contact details for almost all Democratic members of the House of Representatives. This Excel file includes their names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
The other files he published relate directly to the presidential campaign and may not be as interesting unless you know the ins and outs of US politics. The hacker also had a message for the US population:
“ As you see the U.S. presidential elections are becoming a farce, a big political performance where the voters are far from playing the leading role. Everything is being settled behind the scenes as it was with Bernie Sanders. I wonder what happened to the true democracy, to the equal opportunities, the things we love the United States for. The big money bags are fighting for power today. They are lying constantly and don’t keep their word. The MSM are producing tons of propaganda hiding the real stuff behind it. But I do believe that people have right to know what’s going on inside the election process in fact. ”
In a report released yesterday, security firm ThreatConnect linked Guccifer, the DNCLeaks platform, and the cyber-espionage activity of Russian-based intelligence agencies.5/ So this is basically daring the US to respond. Which is interesting in and of itself. — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
6/ So starting at the top, Guccifer2 group first takes credit for the DCCC hack. Confirms @CrowdStrike's analysis. pic.twitter.com/zKrOf1PaXn — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
7/ Next paragraph is a big deal because it intentionally calls the integrity of the US election into question. pic.twitter.com/C7ObLubf4q — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
9/ So first three docs are passwords in various docs. (#ProTip: don't store passwords in files on network shares) pic.twitter.com/F2Df8nA8CR — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
10/ Most are boring (things like research logins etc), but bets one of them reused it as their Windows login? — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
11/ Next doc is a Congressional contacts list. Contains home addr, email, home/hill phone#, CoS, PressSec, Scheduler email/#s. Big PII dump — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
13/ More passwords for media organizations. "dccc2016" seems like a popular password. Wonder what it'll be next election cycle? — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
17/ And why a dump of DCCC phone numbers, emails, and house addresses? It seems designed to incite rather than inform. — Pwn All The Things (@pwnallthethings) August 12, 2016
