Hunter Research and Technology has launched gyroCam for iPhone and iPod touch, its latest addition to the iTunes App Store. gyroCam is a full-featured camera app that automatically levels photos in real time, while shooting.

“With gyroCam, users don’t need to worry about crooked aim or setting up and taking level shots – the app does it for them,” says Hunter Research and Technology.

“gyroCam brings a true point-and-shoot capability to iOS devices, and makes photography easier and more fun,” the developer explains.

The technology embedded in gyroCam allows the app to use a combination of accelerometer and gyro sensors to frame a level shot from any scene.

The app allegedly frames a level 4:3 sub-image from the scene, with perfect alignment every time.

Evidently, the full functionality of the software is only available on iOS devices that are equipped with both a gyroscope, and a camera.

The results are great action shots, macro shots, self portraits, and scene compositions, according to the developer.

It also works great in situations where it's hard to line up a level image due to complicated terrain, bad position, poor aim, or lack of time to aim, says Hunter Research.

As noted above, gyroCam is also a full-featured camera app which offers basic features like small, large, burst, and timer shot modes; manual tap-to-focus and exposure (iPhone 3GS, 4); focus and exposure activity indicators; flash on/off/auto (iPhone 4); 1X, 2X, 4X zoom; fast buffered image saves; and portrait and landscape level reference frames.

Currently at version 1.0.1, gyroCam costs only $0.99 and is available in international App Stores.

In addition to the aforementioned hardware requirements, gyroCam also calls for iOS 4.2.

While some of the functions will not be applicable on older iPhones and iPod touches, the app appears to be supported on old-generation hardware nonetheless.
