The summer of 2015, aka the Summer of Celebrity Splits, brought the announcement that Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were ending their 13-year marriage because of the usual “irreconcilable differences.” It seems that Gwen is using the heartbreak for inspiration for new music.

And she’s turning it into her new single, from what she told audiences at the MasterCard Priceless Surprises concert in New York City over the weekend.

You can see the first live rendering of the song, called “Used to Love You,” in the video below. What suggests that this is a Gavin Rossdale breakup song is Gwen’s choice of words for the introduction.

“I just want to share a song that I wrote recently,” she told the fans. “This song is really special. I think this is gonna be the next single,” she added, before the performance.

Said performance also included pre-taped footage of Gwen projected on the back screen, showing her crying and distraught.

If this isn’t a song about Gavin, she’s definitely trying to make it look like it is. Considering she’s been down on this road before, to excellent results, no wonder she’d be willing to try it again: in 1996, she released with No Doubt the song “Don’t Speak,” which was about her breakup from bassist Tony Kanal. To this day, “Don’t Speak” is the band’s biggest hit.

Here’s “Used to Love You.” Do you think it stands a chance of matching “Don’t Speak”? Let me know in the comments.
