Only subdomain blogs are supported for now

Google announced experimental opt-in support for HTTPS on Blogger (Blogspot) last September. In an announcement today, the company says tests went well and is now turning it on by default for all user blogs.

Back in September, the company added a setting in Blogger's backend that allowed users to turn on HTTPS for their blogs. This setting is now gone since the feature is on for all blogs, but another option has made its way into the backend, one that says "HTTPS Redirect."

This option, if turned on, will automatically redirect all of the blogs' visitors to the HTTPS URL instead of the old insecure HTTP link.

This redirect works automatically, and users accessing older links embedded in various sites or social networks will land on the blog's HTTPS version without having to do anything.

As it was in September, the change only affects subdomain blogs, such as username.blogspot.com, and not the blogs running on custom domains, such as userdomain.com.

The cause of this limitation is "mixed content" errors which still make running HTTPS on custom domain blogs impractical, mainly due to template URL errors.

Google also says that some blogs running on subdomains are likely to face similar errors, but its engineers have created a tool to spot mixed content errors, so blog owners can correct URLs and fix their sites.
