Tab management and search improvements coming to the browser

Google has announced a series of improvements coming to Chrome browser on both desktop and mobile in future updates.

One of the first features to get the go-ahead is a new grid layout for tabs on Android. Already available on iOS, this new feature will provide enhanced tab management, basically allowing users to drag and drop tabs on the screen, group tabs, and keep things organized much better overall.

This feature will go live “over the next few weeks,” Google says.

On desktop, better tab management will be possible with a more polished tab bar that will no longer display titles when you have a plethora of pages loaded in the browser. The tab preview thumbnail helps a lot here, as you can easily determine which website is which by simply hovering a tab with the mouse cursor.

Faster searching

The omnibox is also getting a more polished experience thanks to faster search. Desktop and Android users will be able to perform specific searches instantly without pressing enter, with the results to be displayed in the omnibox. The same thing will work for results about sporting events, local weather, and translations.

Google is also working on a series of personalization options that will give users the chance to make the browser unique.

“If plants and nature help you relax and unwind, change the background of your new tab page to a floral design. If you draw energy from the color yellow, use Chrome’s new color customization tool to change the color of your entire browser to the shade that brings you bliss,” Margret Schmidt, Senior Director Product Management and User Experience, Chrome, says.

Google hasn’t provided a specific ETA as to when these features are supposed to go live, but the company says even more improvements are prepared for the coming updates.
