Google completely retires the Pixel 2 series

As announced some two months ago, Google has completely retired the Pixel 2 series, which means the device would no longer receive further updates and security patches.

Needless to say, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL are both old devices, and with the Pixel 5 already on the market, such a decision pretty much makes sense.

Google originally scheduled the Pixel 2 end of support for October, but the company then announced updates would continue to be offered for two more months.

And now the Pixel 2 series is officially listed as unsupported, with users recommended to upgrade to a newer model to continue getting security patches.

“Pixel phones get the latest version of Android directly from Google. If you bought your device from the Google Store, updates will typically reach your device within 2 weeks. If you bought your device elsewhere, updates can take longer. Pixel phones get Android version updates for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store,” Google explains.

“Pixel phones get security updates for at least 3 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. If the duration is longer, Pixel 3, Pixel 2, and Pixel (2016) phones get security updates for at least 18 months from when the Google Store last sold the device.”

Just upgrade already

If you still use a Google Pixel 2 and try to update it, you should now receive a notification the device is currently unsupported.

Obviously, sticking with a device that no longer receives security patches isn’t by any means recommended, as vulnerabilities affecting the system would no longer be resolved.

Google Pixel 2 has recently received the Android 11 update, and of course, it won’t get the next Android release coming in 2021.
