Google has decided to update one of its most popular applications and bring some changes to the app’s design. Google Photos 2.8 has received this year’s first major update that would help users find photos saved on the device more easily.

Google Photos 2.8 got a cleaner look, making use of a carousel and grid for users to access on-device folders and pictures much more easily. Previously, Albums were displayed with large rectangular cover images, but the new update brings a significant change.

The cover image is now square and half the size of the image in the previous version. This way, users can scroll through two albums at a time in a much easier way.

Google has also decided to rename the “Device folders” section to “Photos on device” and add a carousel type of scrolling feature from the Albums tab. Previously, the fastest way to access photos arranged in folders on the smartphone was by tapping the icon in the navigation drawer.

More features will come in future updates

Moreover, Google also implemented a similar style in the navigation drawer, square cover images are provided for each folder. If users arranged their pictures in certain albums, they would spot them more easily among all picture folders found on the device.

Still, the previous interface made it a bit easier to view the latest pictures, as the app showed the six most recent images in each folder at the top. Tapping on the album would open all pictures, with the option to back up or sync at the top.

A recent app teardown hinted towards the option to edit the time and date on pictures stored on Android smartphones. However, this latest version doesn’t contain such a feature, meaning that Google is still testing the functionality and might release it in the future.

Google Photos 2.8 is already available in the Play Store.
