The company wants to double its sales in 2023

Google is far from becoming the world’s number one phone maker, but on the other hand, the Pixel continues to be one of the most successful models anyway.

The just-launched Pixel 7 is obviously one of the most anticipated releases of the year, though it goes without saying that it wouldn’t become the best-selling device anyway.

In fact, Google has never planned to go that high with its Pixel-branded phones anyway. More often than not, the Pixel is considered a phone for the hardcore Android fanboy, especially as it offers the raw Android experience with support for easy rooting and everything else.

But according to a report from Nikkei, Google has very ambitious targets for its phone strategy, as the company wants to sell more units in the coming years.

And it all starts with the Pixel 7, as Google has apparently requested suppliers to build over 8 million units. For Google, this is a big increase, especially as the Pixel 6 production came down to approximately 7 million units.

But what’s more important for the future of the search giant’s mobile strategy is the 2023 strategy, as the company wants to launch a more affordable smartphone. This isn’t necessarily surprising given Google’s strategy, as it’s a well-known thing that affordable devices and mid-range models are the ones helping companies gain market share.

On the other hand, very little is known on this point, and people familiar with the matter seem to be expecting the cheaper Pixel to go live at some point in the first months of 2023 (I’m betting on the spring, as this is typically the right timeframe for the debut of new devices).

As a result, Google hopes it can double its smartphone sales next year, so it’ll certainly be interesting to see how this plan goes for the search giant.
