OnePlus' cable does not support USB Type-C 1.1

USB Type-C is one of the most welcomed improvements included in today's flagship smartphones, but the new feature has yet to become the standard.

Although microUSB is still largely used in smartphones, USB Type-C has made real changes to replace the older technology.

There aren't many smartphones available on the market that use USB Type-C port and not even those have similar technology behind.

Let's take the OnePlus 2, for example, which doesn't support USB Type-C 1.1, but comes with an older version of the protocol.

Now, if you are to purchase an original OnePlus USB Type-C cable to recharge your Nexus device, it should work in theory.

The cable works safely only with OnePlus 2

However, Google employee Benson Leung had tested OnePlus' cable and didn't recommend those who own the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X to use it with their devices.

“I found that this adapter does not correctly charge the Chromebook Pixel and other Type-C devices. My analysis shows that this cable, although will charge and provide data through to the devices, does not correctly follow the USB Type-C specification for power delivery identification.

“The Oneplus adapter advertises itself as 3A capable, but that is not appropriate because this is a legacy host port adapter,” explains Benson in his review on Amazon.

According to him, the OnePlus 2's USB Type-C port uses USB 2.0 and not USB 3.1, so even though the phone supports USB Type-C 1.0 protocol, it's not compatible with USB Type-C 1.1.

The bottom line is that OnePlus accessories will only work as intended with OnePlus 2 and not with Google's Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P or the Chromebook Pixel.

“By using this cable, your phone, tablet, or laptop computer may attempt to draw 3A, which may be more than the micro-b to A cable you attach to this adapter may be able to handle. This may cause damage to whatever cable, hub, PC, or charger you plug into this,” concluded Benson.
