New version now available for download on Android devices

Google has released a new update for its Drive app on Android, bringing support for password-protected Microsoft Office documents.

Technically, with this update Google Drive can open and view Microsoft Office files, be they Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or PowerPoint presentations, even if they are protected with a password. Users are prompted to enter the password when tapping the files, just like they’d normally do on a PC.

This feature comes in handy especially in the case of shared accounts where more users get access to cloud content but only some are allowed to view documents. Also, it can be used in schools where tighter control of access to Office files is necessary.

The version bringing support for password-protected Microsoft Office documents is 2.18.252.01 and it can be downloaded using the link in the last paragraph.

The same build also includes other bug fixes and performance improvements, so updating is recommended as soon as possible for all Android users.

Microsoft Office on Android

Despite the fact that Microsoft Office documents are used on all platforms, Microsoft itself is also offering the productivity suite on both desktop and mobile devices.

On Android, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote receive updates on a regular basis, becoming the leading solutions for mobile users who want to easily open and edit documents on their devices. Microsoft Word, for instance, has more than 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store with a general rating of 4.5 stars and more than 2 million reviews.

As a native cloud solution, Google Drive offering better support for Microsoft Office documents is clearly a welcome improvement, especially because it improved file handling in office environments and in schools.
