New feature coming to the next big version of Chrome

Google Chrome remains the world’s number one browser, and Google is working non-stop on adding new functionality, so it goes without saying the next big release will also include some welcome improvements.

Google Chrome 91, which is currently available as a beta, will introduce a new clipboard update, essentially making it easier for users to attach files to an email.

Called read-only files support for the clipboard, this feature will essentially allow apps to read files from the clipboard, without providing writing permissions.

What this means is that users can now just press Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V to copy and paste files on the desktop in Chrome, which makes it easier to perform certain tasks that would otherwise require the typical drag and drop operation.

Flag already in beta build

“This proposes to expose read-only files on the clipboard to renderers using a similar approach to drag-and-drop. Renderers will have access to read files from the clipboard, but not write files to the clipboard. For files on the clipboard, renderers will have read-only access,” Google explains.

“Chrome supports files via DataTransfer for drag and drop, but not for clipboard. It is useful for users to be able to use clipboard keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V for a task such as attaching a file to an email rather than only drag and drop.”

According to the official release calendar, Google Chrome 91 is projected to be released on May 25, but users who want to try out this new feature can already do this in the beta build.

And it’s all because Google has introduced a new flag called “Clipboard filenames” that allows you to enable “support reading files in clipboard DataTransfer.” According to the flag description, this feature will work on all supported platforms except for iOS.
