Google has recently released version 100 of its well-known browser, and the company used this opportunity to introduce several big changes, including a new icon.

As you can see in the image posted on Twitter by Google Chrome designer Elvin Hu, the new Google Chrome looks more polished than the version introduced in 2014, though it goes without saying some people might have a hard time noticing the changes.

“We simplified the main brand icon by removing the shadows, refining the proportions and brightening the colors, to align with Google's more modern brand expression,” the designer explains.

“We created OS-specific customizations. We want the icons to feel recognizably Chrome, but also well crafted for each OS. For example, on Windows, the icons take on an obviously gradated look, appearing at home on Windows 10 & 11. On ChromeOS, they use brighter colors without gradients to match the looks of the rest of system icons. On macOS, they look 3D. For Beta and Dev, we applied colorful ribbons to them.”

Other changes in Chrome 100

The new version of Google Chrome comes with fixes for no more, no less than 28 security vulnerabilities, with the biggest bounty paid by Google for use-after-free bug in the Shopping Car. Wei Yuan of MoyunSec VLab received a $16,000 reward for reporting the flaw.

The biggest payment for a high-severity vulnerability concerned a use-after-free bug in Portals, this time reported by Khalil Zhani back in January. Google issued a $7,000 bounty for the reward.

Google Chrome obviously introduces a new three-digit user agent, so hopefully, all websites handle it correctly. Browser makers have been preparing for this change for several months already, so web developers should theoretically be ready for a new user agent version number.

The new Google Chrome version is available for download on all supported platforms, including desktop and mobile.
