Chinese OEM Gionee has another mid-range smartphone in the pipeline, the M5 Plus. The smartphone recently visited TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, as Gionee GN8001.

According to a new report, Gionee plans to launch the M5 Plus on December 21. The smartphone is likely to be introduced in China initially, but there's a high chance the M5 Plus will be available in other Asian countries in the coming months.

There's no word on price yet, but judging by the phone's specs, this one shouldn't be too expensive. Obviously, when launched in other countries, Gionee might price the M5 Plus a bit higher than the Chinese version.

Moving on to specs, Gionee M5 Plus will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system with Amigo UI on top of it. It's way too early to talk about an upcoming Marshmallow upgrade, but we shouldn't rule that out.

A decent phablet that will be initially launched in China

Customers that prefer phablets over regular-size smartphones will be pleased to know that Gionee M5 Plus comes with a huge 6-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that supports full HD (1080p) resolution and features Corning Gorilla Glass coating.

On the inside, the M5 Plus packs an unimpressive 1.3GHz octa-core MediaTek 6753 processor, complemented by 3GB of RAM.

The good news is the smartphone comes with 32GB of storage that can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card slot.

At the back, the phone features a 13-megapixel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, while in the front there's a secondary 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Connectivity-wise, Gionee M5 Plus offers both 4G LTE and dual-SIM support, along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with AGPS and USB OTG (on-the-go).

Last but not least, Gionee M5 Plus is powered by a massive 5,020 mAh battery and features a fingerprint sensor under the phone's home button.
