It’s been years that the tabloid media has been saying that the day would come when George Clooney would hang up his acting clothes and put on a more formal garb, to kickstart a career in politics. These reports picked considerable speed around his wedding to Amal Alamuddin, now Clooney, in September 2014.

One year later, and Clooney is yet to make any kind of announcement in this sense. That’s because he has no interest in a career in politics, the actor revealed in a recent interview cited by The Daily Beast.

Public office, no, thank you, says Clooney

Clooney was in Beverly Hills a few days ago to promote the film “Our Brand Is Crisis,” which he executive produced but doesn’t star in (it’s with Sandra Bullock in the lead). The film is about a political manager, so it wasn’t long until Clooney’s personal life was brought up in relation to the film.

So, was there ever any truth to the rumors that he might want to give a political career a try? If we’re to believe reports, he was either considering the position of Governor of California or that of President of the United States. At least no one could ever blame him for not dreaming big.

The answer is a flat-out “no.”

“Who would ever want to live like that?” Clooney asks. “I’m friends with a lot of those guys and I just think it’s hell. I commend people who go into public service because it’s such a horrible way to get elected, it’s such a horrible time while you’re in office, it’s more polarized now than arguably since the Civil War in many ways, and I think people will argue over things that they believed in 6 years ago or 8 years ago because it’s not their guy saying it. So, no, I wouldn’t want to be in politics. I have no interest in it.”

He does, however, have an interest in staying on the outside and seeing to that stuff he’s interested in gets done.

The so-called “Amal experiment”

As noted above, after George and Amal confirmed their engagement, buzz online started that he was only marrying her to boost his political odds. She, as an international rights attorney and a woman who was, by all means, his “equal,” brought him the credibility he lacked for being a movie star.

The tabloids called it “the Amal experiment” and they were quick to say, months within the marriage, that it had failed. Amal didn’t get too involved in her husband’s work and she certainly didn’t seem to make him a more reputable potential politician, they argued.

If anything, she helped him get attention for the same things his many exes also got: her fashion choices, her accessorizing style, and speculation on whether she was pregnant or not.

With Clooney’s denial, we can probably put to rest all that talk that the marriage was some kind of strategy for Clooney to get his political career off the ground.
