And best of all, you can actually get them for free

If you’re looking to refresh your desktop and want a high-quality wallpaper, how about using a new old background that comes in 6K resolution?

There’s no mistake in there because what we have here is a pack of the original Mac OS X wallpapers remastered in 6K resolution and supporting the full P3 wide color gamut.

In other words, they’re old wallpapers that look like new, all thanks to developer Rafael Conde who made the whole thing possible and, even more importantly, released everything free of charge online.

So you can download the full pack of wallpapers in 6K resolution from his website, along with versions specifically optimized for iPhone, iPad, and the Mac desktop.

How the whole thing was possible

If you think this was an easy business, it’s not something that the Average Joe can do. But on the other hand, the developer reckons there’s nothing fancy in the process of borrowing an old wallpaper and then remastering it in 6K resolution.

“Nothing fancy, I tracked down original versions of the wallpapers, upscaled them using Machine Learning, applied a P3 color space, Machine Learning to de-noise, and then manually tweaked them to more closely match how I remembered them. It's not perfect, but this was the best I could do,” he said.

Don’t trust Rafa when he says these wallpapers aren’t perfect. The 6K resolution makes them look unbelievably good, especially on larger displays that support the P3 color space.

You can find the entire collection on the website mentioned above, and scroll download to also find the versions specifically aimed at other Apple devices (iPad and iPhone) if you don’t want to get the entire pack on your desktop computer.

P.S.: these wallpapers also look amazing on a Windows computer too.
