14 DAY TRIAL // Windows phone diehard fans are probably tired of hearing again and again that Windows 10 Mobile is dead, but fortunately, they don’t have to give up on their Lumia phones just yet.
That’s because skilled developers in the Windows phone community are actively searching for a way to install full Windows 10 on Lumia phones, and by the looks of things, things are taking shape quite nicely.
This recent video published on Twitter by @imbushuo shows Windows 10 (ARM) installed and booting to the first setup experience on a Lumia 950 XL, Microsoft’s last Windows 10 Mobile flagship that launched in late 2015.
At first glance, having Windows 10 on a Lumia phone is quite a neat way to keep these devices around for a little bit more time, but in the long term, it’s certainly not a feasible project.
Not a feasible project in the long term
Running full Windows 10 on a Windows 10 Mobile obviously comes with limitations and without Microsoft’s own involvement in the project, fully-supported drivers, and active development of new features, it’s nearly impossible to make this something that can become a daily driver for anyone.
For the sake of experimenting with different implementations of Windows 10 on Lumia phones, however, all these projects are without a doubt welcome, especially as they show Microsoft’s mobile push had a lot of potential it everything was done right.
In the meantime, Windows 10 Mobile is heading towards its last months of support, as Microsoft will stop shipping updates and security patches in mid-2019. At this point, the platform is in maintenance mode, which means nothing beside emergency security updates is being released to devices still running it.
Microsoft is believed to be working on a new mobile device that could possibly run full Windows 10, and the launch might take place later this year.
