Bring the Lumia 950 back to life with Windows 10 on ARM

Installing Windows 10 (ARM) on a Lumia 950 XL is possible with the right tools and skills, but until now, this option was only limited to Microsoft’s bigger flagship.

And yet, it was only a matter of time until the ARM version of Windows 10 made it to other phones as well, so today, developer @NTAuthority managed to do just that on a regular Lumia 950.

As he explains on Twitter, more work needs to be done to make Windows 10 run smoothly on a Lumia 950 because at this point, it lacks the proper power driver, but on the other hand, with some changes to the original tutorial posted on GitHub, anyone could get a taste of how it runs.

“Most of it matches, however you'll have to replace some ACPI tables with patched versions from the 950, and to run with core drivers you'll have to patch a few of them,” NTAuthority said on Twitter when asked whether the original instructions can be followed step by step to install Windows 10 on a regular Lumia 950. “I'd suggest waiting for future instructions by people involved with this research.”

Expanding to more Lumia models

Most likely, it’s again just a matter of time until Windows 10 on ARM is installed on other Lumia models, though it’ll be interesting to see if the performance is similar despite the obviously slower hardware.

Lumia 950 XL is Microsoft’s latest flagship launched in October 2015, and it comes with a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB storage. The device features a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen.

On the other hand, its smaller sibling, the standard Lumia 950 is powered by a Snapdragon 808 chip also paired with 3GB RAM, but in this case, the display measures only 5.2 inches. Both feature a 20-megapixel camera with OIS, Zeiss optics, and triple-LED RGB flash.
