Touch ID could also make its return on the iPhone 16

We’ve known for a while that Apple was working on bringing back Touch ID to the iPhone, but now it looks like we really shouldn’t hold our breaths for the whole thing to happen.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has recently revealed on Twitter that the return of Touch ID on the iPhone is unlikely to take place earlier than 2024

The Cupertino-based tech giant wants to integrate a fingerprint sensor into the screen of the iPhone just like Samsung has already done on some models, like the Galaxy S22. The fingerprint sensor embedded under the glass, however, is something that Apple wants to get right from the first attempt, and at first glance, the company doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make it happen.

Once this happens, the iPhone can really become all-screen, and Kuo says this is expected to happen in 2024 when the iPhone 16 launches.

“I think the real full-screen iPhone will come in 2024. High-end iPhones in 2024 would adopt an under-display front camera alongside the under-display Face ID. A low-light condition is detrimental to front camera quality, and ISP & algorithm are critical for quality improvements,” he said.

iPhone 14 improvements

In the meantime, Apple is giving the finishing touches to the iPhone 14 ahead of the September launch.

This time, the company will give up on the notch on the Pro models (the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max will continue to come with this controversial design approach) and will use a punch-hole camera similar to the one on Samsung’s devices.

This is believed to be the first step towards a full-screen iPhone, possibly as more refinements would be introduced on the iPhone 15 next year.

Of course, Apple has remained completely tight-lipped on everything so far, so take the report with a pinch of salt for the time being.
