Batteries can overheat, eventually catch fire

Lenovo has recently started a laptop recall in the United States and Canada due to issues that could cause a number of models to overheat and eventually catch fire, and now Fujitsu does the same thing due to what appears to be a bad battery on specific notebooks and workstations.

One such laptop that’s included in the recall has already caught fire, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC), but no other details were provided aside from the fact that the incident took place in Canada. Most likely, the battery overheated and caused the device to burst into flames, but this is just pure speculation right now.

The devices themselves aren’t the ones to blame for the issue, but the Panasonic lithium-ion battery packs that are being used on them, and CPSC says there are around 5,800 units impacted in the United States and another 606 in Canada.

Stop using the laptops

According to their recall announcement, “the lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers.” Fujitsu has agreed to replace the battery with a new one.

The affected models include Fujitsu Celsius H720 and several LifeBook models – you can see the full list in the table at the end of the article. The recalled battery product numbers are CP556150-03, CP579060-01 and CP629458-03, and you can determine if your device is included in the program by checking the white sticker on the battery and comparing the numbers with the ones in the table below.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled battery packs, power off the laptop, remove the battery and follow instructions to obtain a free replacement battery pack. Until a replacement battery pack is received, consumers should use the laptop by plugging in AC power only,” the CPSC says.

Consumers in the United States who seek more information on the recall program can contact Fujitsu directly at 800- 835-4878 or 800-8FUJITSU.
