14 DAY TRIAL // The administrators of Liberty-Market, a marketplace where cyber-criminals can exchange stolen goods, are hiring a proofreader, of all things, and they're willing to pay up to €700 ($790) per month for someone to review the site's content and correct spelling mistakes.
But there's a catch! The site is in French, and all salary payments are in illegal goods, such as stolen passwords, stolen payment card numbers, malware samples, exploits, and others.
The job listing, spotted by analysts from security firm Trend Micro, requires the new hire to log in on the marketplace four times a week for at least one hour and 30 minutes each time and review any new listings.
The proofreader will have to correct the format of the post, by adding new lines, spaces, or putting headlines in bold, to improve readability. They will also have to correct any spelling mistakes made by users from other countries who used automatic translation tools such as Bing or Google to translate their texts before publishing them on the site.
Most errors come from automatic translation tools
According to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), a US agency that trains government officials for service abroad, French is an easy language to learn, currently classified with a Category 1 difficulty (the lowest), taking 23-24 weeks (575-600 hours) to learn.
Nevertheless, because most cyber-criminals use automatic translation tools, their texts get all mangled up, and very few bother to correct them, regarding both grammar and visual style.
Since most crooks aren't fluent in French and post on multiple marketplaces, a simple copy-paste from Google Translate is all you get.
As such, to maximize the chances of a successful sale, Liberty-Market admins have taken the issue into their own hands in order to boost their profits. Because admins make money by taking cuts from marketplace transactions or via the escrow service, their move shows the lengths to which some of today's crooks will go to ensure their service comes out on top of the competition.
