Konami is trying to do something different

Konami has just revealed that the free-to-play version of PES 2016 for PC is now available on Steam.

Konami is still trying to close the gap between PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) and FIFA, and they are running out of ways to do it. One of the solutions is to attract more players to PES and what better way to do that then to offer it for free. Well, sort of free.

As you can imagine, offering the entire PES 2016 for free would bankrupt the publisher, so they have put together a sort of an extended demo that incorporates just a few of the features. It's an interesting strategy that might just work, even if it hasn't been tried before.

What can you play in the free-to-play PES 2016?

The name on Steam is technically “Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 myClub,” because this version includes a full training section from the myClub feature.

“Those who haven’t yet experienced PES 2016 will be able to download a free, entry-level version of the game which boasts an Exhibition Mode complete with the choice of seven teams including Bayern Munich, Juventus, AS Roma, Brazil and France,” Konami wrote in the announcement.

The interesting aspect is that users will also have access to online and offline play, and unlimited access to the myClub mode, not to mention that it's also possible to use micro-transactions, but that was a given.

Also, Konami said that the free-to-play “Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 myClub” would be compatible with all the updates to be launched for the full game, including rosters and seasons updates.

This will be a very interesting experiment for Konami and it might spice things up a little bit. Who knows, maybe we’ll see something similar for FIFA from Electronic Arts, if it proves to be a good business model.
