Fossil has become really committed to the smartwatch market, and while very little is known about what’s next in the wearable industry for the company, it looks like an LTE device is all but confirmed.

While the rumor mill previously hinted Fossil would indeed plan new models, FCC documents come to confirm a smartwatch with LTE support is in the works, though that’s pretty much everything we’re being told right now.

Whether or not the LTE device would be a variant of the Gen 5 or not is something that remains to be seen, but with CES just around the corner, there’s a chance we’ll hear more about the whole thing rather sooner than later.

LTE smartwatches

Are you surprised that Fossil is working on an LTE smartwatch? You shouldn’t be.

Fossil is one of the companies betting big on smartwatches these days, and the company has previously bet big on the Gen 5, with the upcoming Gen 6 expected to bring even bigger upgrades.

LTE smartwatches have become the new trend in the wearable market, as they allow such a device to work independently from a smartphone, essentially replacing some phone capabilities entirely.

However, an LTE model would obviously be more expensive, and this is clearly something every manufacturer should have in mind before coming up with such a device.

In the meantime, Fossil remains committed to Wear OS, and the upcoming Gen 6 should bring substantial improvements not only in terms of software but also as far as the hardware is concerned. Let’s not forget the company’s flagship model comes with a 2018 chip, so if Fossil wants to remain relevant in the smartwatch business, it needs to come up with a new model featuring the latest-generation hardware.
